February News

We finished the Introduction to Yoga series and have a great new group who are ready to join us! The Intro class is now 'Yoga Basics' and will be held on Saturdays from 11-12. We will explore the same poses that a regular flow class has to offer but the poses will be repeated more often and not held quite as long. If you know anyone who wants to give yoga a try but doesn't want to commit to a 4-week Intro series...this is the class for them! Class starts THIS Saturday- February 9th!

Randy Pace will be doing photography for the studio this weekend so I can begin to really get the word out about the studio with fliers, mailings, etc. If you are interested, check out his website here- http://www.randypacephotography.com/

Emerald City Yoga is one of the proud sponsors of my son's Greenwood-Abbeville Little League team called The Rascals. ECY logo will be on their shirts and a banner that will hang at baseball fields near the YMCA. GO RASCALS! Opening day is March 2.

Mark your calendars! Communi-tea has been rescheduled for Saturday, February 16 from 7-9. We will meet for a social gathering (no yoga) with light refreshments and some guitar music played by my husband, Kerry. Hopefully Mother Nature will cooperate this time!

Upcoming dates/events:

There will not be any weekend classes March 1-3.

Save the date! Communi-tea has already been scheduled for March 8 from 7-9! We are doing something really fun and you won't want to miss it! (I know it's only a few weeks after Feb. 16 but this was the only date the featured musician had available... and, trust me, it's SO WORTH IT!)

 (hint, hint!)

Open studio times on Sundays- coming soon! Watch the Emerald City Yoga page on Facebook for dates and times!

The next Introduction to Yoga series will begin Monday, April 8 at 7pm. I decided to try an evening Intro class for this round. Please spread the word to your friends!

Unfortunately, I had to reschedule my plans for a kid's class and restorative class on Thursdays. Watch for new dates soon!

Suggestions???

Do you have ideas or suggestions for the studio in order to help it grow? I'd LOVE to hear them! Some ideas I am tossing around are a meditation series and a book club. Any takers??? :)

January News

Hi, everyone! Just wanted to touch base and give you the latest news from Emerald City Yoga.

First- thank you, thank you, thank you for hanging with me as we transitioned to our new yoga space. It's so generous of Colleen Tebo to offer us this space! I am grateful to all of you and to Colleen for making Emerald City Yoga come to life!

The studio is continuing to grow and change. You may have noticed the flags hanging in the front window. They are Tibetan prayer flags. Prayer flags are typically found strung along mountain ridges and peaks high in the Himalayas. They are used to bless the surrounding countryside and for other purposes. The flags that are hanging in our window are Medicine Buddha flags and are typically used to help anyone who is focusing on healing: physically, emotionally, or spiritually.

Everyone loves the bolsters from Inner Space Yoga! I will be bringing more back from Asheville in early February. If you don't know what they are- they are yoga "pillows" that help support your body during a gentle and restorative practice. Come see for yourself if you haven't already!

I have ordered curtains which will separate the practice space from the seating/kitchen area. They are supposed to be here on January 23 and will be in place shortly after.

There is also a new book shelf that holds straps/blocks. On the bottom shelf there are a few books (and more to come) for you to borrow. I placed a notebook there for you to sign them out. Please feel free to borrow away!

The new Introduction to Yoga series is off to a great start! I had 5 new students join me on the first day. If you know anyone who couldn't be at the first class but would like to attend, they can still jump in this Saturday. I plan to have another Introduction to Yoga series in April.

DON'T FORGET! Communi-tea is January 25 from 7-9. Join us for some social time and guitar music played by my husband, Kerry. We will have coffee, hot tea, and water. Hope you will join us!

Coming in February- Kids yoga and a flow/restorative combo yoga begins February7. More details to come!

Class changes for February- I will not have Ashtanga-inspired yoga on February 2 or February 23 because I will be away at workshops/teacher training learning lots of wonderful things to share.

I look forward to seeing all of you soon!

 Namaste
Jennifer

A New Years Intention

At a recent teacher training, we discussed the 5 root causes of suffering (kleshas). You come up with a thought of something that would bring happiness (avidya), you have the misunderstanding that whatever "it" is will bring happiness (asmita), you crave it and will do anything to get it (raja), after awhile you decide "it" really isn't as great as you thought and you do anything you can to get away from it (dvesha), and then fear (abhinivesa) sets in because you can't have it.

Let's pretend my husband made my favorite triple chocolate cheesecake for me for my birthday [if you know me, you know there is no pretending here :) ]. All I could think about is diving into it later that night with my family. After the "Happy Birthday" song, I could FINALLY have a piece of that  cheesecake. "I want the biggest piece of cheesecake known to man"- I can remember saying.  My husband obliged (of course) since it was my birthday. I dove into my slice like there was no tomorrow. Mmmmmm.... About halfway through I started to feel a little queasy and decided that maybe, just maybe, the "biggest slice known to man" wasn't such a good idea but somehow I finished off the rest. Then it hit... one of the worst stomach aches that I ever felt. WHY did I eat so much of that cheesecake? I never want to eat cheesecake again. But- WAIT! What if I can't eat cheesecake ever again because it made me feel ill? What if I am allergic to cheesecake?!?!

Delusions. We all have them. We are all human. We all want to be happy.... and we are all just sure that "that thing" will bring us happiness... the cheesecake, the car, those jeans, that book got rave reviews, or those super cute shoes. Sure- they bring happiness but not for long.

Imagine if we didn't react to our delusion of what we thought would bring happiness. Imagine if we took that time to breathe instead of reacting. Imagine if we thought ahead about what our reactions would cause. Imagine if I had thought- "If I eat that huge piece of cheesecake, I am going to feel miserable" instead of just plunging ahead and giving into my desire of that huge piece of awesomeness.

At the end of 2011, I went to great lengths to make a vision board. I was really excited about having something in my face everyday that could remind me of things I wanted to cultivate in my life during the coming year. The truth of the matter is that it didn't do the trick. Why? I was still driven by that immediate "thing" that would bring happiness.

Although vision boards can be a great tool, there is not going to be a vision board for me this year. My vision for myself this year is to live by intention in order to become a more positive version of myself. When we set an intention instead of the usual "resolution" it becomes not about what we get at the end but about the path towards bringing that intention to life. My personal intention is to move further away from delusion, to be more mindful, to breathe more, and react less. I am excited to see where this path leads and excited see what the new year will bring!

Happy New Year to you!
